Packing in the rain
Day 9 of EuroVelo6 ride across Europe. Today's ride would have taken us fromParay-le-Monial to Demigny. Actually we arrived in Demigny but by van. The morning started out cloudy and rain threatening. After breakfast it started to sprinkle, then rain, then thunderstorms, then lightening, then thunder. I have ridden in those conditions in the past but as I stated earlier, I have gotten a little smarten in my old age. We decided to do the tourist thing which was always part of our plan for this ride anyway. We decided to tour the Benedictine Abbey at Cluny. Briefly, in 910 William, the pious, Duke of Aquitaine and Count of Macon, founded an abbey answerable directly to the pope. Cluny was the mother house for over `1000 monasteries. It was a place of European repute and went on to become the seat of the largest monastic order in the West, the Cluniac order. For more Google it. It was a great place to visit during our rain day.
As we were driving to our stop for the day, we passed a winery. Remember, we are in the Burgundy area of France. It's probably the most famous wine producing area in the world (I know, you Californians would disagree). And it would be irresponsible to not stop at a winery in Burgundy. Since we were the only ones there, the owners gave us the wine tasting experience with enormous amount of information regarding the in's and out's of fine wine making. Needless to say we purchased several bottles and had them shipped to the states. So, all in all, a very productive day on our ride across Europe. Tomorrow it's back on the bikes. The pics of the Cluny Abby tell the story of our experience there. They may seem repetitive but sometimes I just don't know when to quit.
