So, these high gas prices has now impacted my biking routine. Conditions were perfect for a 35 miler to Magnolia. Wind was SSW at 15 to 20 mph. Temp was in mid 60's so those conditions would be conducive to that particular ride. Three concerns resulted in rejecting one of my favorite rides in the area. First, they were repairing about 8 miles of the road from Varna to Magnolia. No shoulders and unlined. Passable but construction equipment to traverse added to the issue. Secondly, since this is the harvest season in these parts, grain semi's are numerous. In fact, last year 30 of those semi's passed me on the road. Most were very courteous but a couple were real jerks putting me a very precarious positions. Not wanting to dodges those monsters played a role in my decision. And third, gas prices locally are $4.59 per gallon. Here's the math, 70 miles at 25 mpg. means $13- $15 for Veronica to retrieve me. In addition to our usual stop at Bob's for ice cream the total would be about $30. A ride locally equals zero dollars. Economic now is dictating my biking habits. Not good. Still looking for a century but getting close to end of outdoor season. Stay tuned.
